Pleased to share my contribution to the latest 3D TOTAL character anthology "heroines" a compilation of warrior designs from a great lineup of artists. My contribution was a Inca/ Mayan/ Aztec warrior goddess with a in depth tutorial on how to create a compelling character design. Inspired by pre-Columbian art and their philosophy to design her shape language and personality, I set out to create Coatlicue, an Aztec mother goddess. Fierce and frightening. Creator and destroyer. A warrior with deep links between the cosmos, humanity and the natural world.
----
To create her and a well rounded character full of dimension, I focused on the 3 main aspects of a good story to create an stylized character that is not flat: Story (the context and world in which she lives), the visuals (an striking art style that will help bring to the surface who she is and tie her to the story) and her psyche or personality (who is she inside and how she interacts with the world. )
----
Through this ideas map I interrelated these main concepts, assigning a shape language to each one of these ideas and combining them to explore interesting characters. This way we strive the shapes and stylization from within, with a deep and profound base and not just for the sake of doing a good looking character.
